I agree completely... I play now and then in Second Life, Blue Mars, and even Whirled. I love to make things, so all of them pulled me in fairly easily. But I find that non-creators especially, are just lost and confused without some kind of clear direction and purpose.

It was content creation that sucked me into Minecraft too. At first I didn't really want to give it a shot (the graphics were a bit of a turn off for me, lol). But, watching my husband play it just gave me the "building" bug. I have now created many new worlds, explored endless freaky caves and filled a ridiculous number of creeper created holes. It is an excellent game.

I really don't know how to take any of the existing virtual worlds and give them that kind of pull. I was also afraid of combat zones, or just wandering into strange places for that matter. So many of them feel unwelcoming, or look confusing and jarring. And even talking to new people can be intimidating without something to pull you together.

More and more though, it seems to me that groups of people within the game might be better off to pull people in, rather than the LL. A good medieval sim, with a strong story line, clear sense of purpose, good starter gear, quests, etc... might pull in more wow players for example. Provided that it was marketed as a unique role play game rather than trying to sell people on the entire virtual universe at once.

I think it all boils down to the fact that it isn't that hard to get the creators, but its hard to hold the ones that just come to socialize a bit and harder still to convince the gamers that things like SL are games at all. It might actually be up to us as content creators/scripters/artists to give people that missing direction and purpose if we want these kind of games to succeed. We basically need to give purpose to parts of this amazing sandbox, and make sure that the right people get there :)

Video conversation can go on, for example on http://phreadz.com
Just click any channel of the right handside list and sign up there. Once this is done you can go on sharing video conversation. The spirit of sharing among cultures of the world can not have died. Let's live a global world but a world at a human scale: Video conversation gives this global world exactly that scale. Asynchronous video conversation is not only the recent past of seesmic; it is the bright future of a better world!

I have an Android phone, and I let my 2 (almost 3)-year-old use it. There is a drawing program called "Toddler lock" which lets her use the touch screen to draw on - and she cannot access any other part of the phone while that is running. I still have to remind her to only use fingers on the touch screen (not her fork) and to be gentle.

She also likes to watch Youtube on the phone. She demands that I navigate to the next video rather than being able to do it herself yet. Besides playing with the fastforward/back touch keys during the video, she keeps her hands to herself while watching videos.

At that age, she doesn't "get" e-books. She has regular books in her room (mostly board books) and she's at the age where she doesn't gnaw on them. She understands that the Kindle is "mommy's book" and she should not manhandle it.

OK, I'm weighing in very late here, but I just found this from other connections....

Hmm, for shows, how about "Honoring the Directions and Ancestors" by a Tauren? "Night Elf Dance Party" sounds appropriate. "What's Got Your Fur Up?" a call-in show by/for Worgen "Practical Uses For Left Over Parts" a DYI show by Gnomes. "Challenging The Assumption That Humans Are Boring," by a Human, of course.

Commercial breaks? Oh yeah... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQCnzbHEUDA&NR=1

It is true - the silly was only part of the conversation - perhaps what broke through the "ice". In the end we talked about just about any topic and had real conversations and shared each others lives. If it had only been silly I suspect I wouldn't feel so strongly about the friends that I made there, such as you.

I hope you don't mind but I've edited the post so it doesn't say "In all this silly video at all hours of the night" but rather "In all this video" as you so aptly point out.

Not all the video was silly, by any means.. there was much openness, sharing, creativity, exchange, even beauty.
